You might have heard over the weekend that President Barack Obama made a surprise campaign stop at the Gators Dockside bar in Orlando. But you might not have known that Gators Dockside is one of Kimco’s tenants in our Grand Oaks Village shopping center.
Gators Dockside is a popular place to watch college football games, and the president showed his Florida Gator Country spirit when he walked into the bar doing the Gator Chomp — a move well-known by University of Florida fans where you slice your arms in the motion of an alligator’s snapping jaw.
Obama made headlines, though, when he met Andre Wupperman. The president learned the young boy was born in Hawaii and greeted him with a shaka hand sign, a traditional way to say hello in Hawaii. Then Obama asked Andre, “You were born in Hawaii? You have a birth certificate?” The table busted into laughter according to press reports. You can watch the video of Obama’s joke here.
At another table, Obama visited a family celebrating Sorina Terrell’s birthday and led the group in singing “Happy Birthday.”
We were honored to have the president at one of our centers, and we invite Mitt Romney to stop by one of our centers during his campaign tour as well!
